Read full description of the books:
What I liked about this book is that von Daniken’s bias is clear and yet he never really beats you over the head with his theory, he simply presents the facts and asks if the conclusions mainstream science seem valid and indeed they don’t. I think this is part of my problem with the scientific community is that they seem to have lost their sense of wonder and become as dogmatic as religious institutions they claim to be in opposition to. Both religion and science require faith, neither can be said to be valid without room for doubt and yet the scientific community seems to shun the idea of alternative theories.
I’m not saying I necessarily agree with every conclusion Daniken draws but the idea that these structures are built to be visible only from an aerial vantage point is very suggestive. The final chapter in which he offers his own theories for what to make of these strange phenomena’s was my favourite in which he introduces the theory that life may have been germinated on Earth either purposefully or accidentally but from an external source.
This idea really rang true with me if you think of the entire universe as beginning in a single moment – the big bang – then it stands to reason that the materials that construct the universe would be the same basic elements everywhere, making it not only likely that life comes from a single source but probable.
