Read full description of the books:
I read this book while working the event that unveiled the Nook Color Touch whatever it is all called to the world. the Nook Color Touch whatever it is called is the greatest reading experience ever (trademark - registered, whatever). I never thought of reading as an experience before. I think it's a relatively physically passive but mentally stimulating action, but it's a stretch to call it an experience. But maybe that is because I've never had to read dependent on a battery filled with toxic shit that will stay with us for years and years after this piece of technology has been surpassed by other pieces of technology that have also been surpassed by how many generations of other pieces of surpassed and soon to be surpassed, even if only in a superficial manner, objects of intensely wanted and soon forgotten devices.
So while people were practicing speeches and saying things in spontaneous manners I read this book. In the dark. In between bringing books down to other floors for customers and then returning to the dark floor with people more important than me in every way shape and form did things of the utmost importance; I read.
In a digital book world this would not have been read by me.
It was the serendipity sort of find. A book with an attractive design and a kind of catchy title. The picture does no justice to the materiality of the book. It's a nice looking artifact.
I guess I would know of this book in the digital world if the author, or the publisher, or maybe the translator bombarded me with some kind of ad on goodreads.com. Sort of like is being done right now for the third movie in the Girl who Eats Sandwiches series of books / movies. Or maybe one of these people could become a member on a website such as this and bombard people with friend requests and recommendations to read the book.
None of these methods would work to make me read the book though. Probably they would make me go out of my way to never read it.
Not that I would have missed out on too much.
The book was a resounding ok.
It was based on a historical incident that my American-centric self knew nothing about. Which is fine. But I got lost in some of the details of royalty. I'm kind of ignorant about the royal families of early 20th century Spain and England, so at times I got a little lost in who was being focused on. Maybe if I were reading it in a more ideal setting or with a device that would have given me a better experience than the old boring experience of holding a dead tree in my hands and having to physically turn from one page to another (owww my arm) I would have been able to pay more attention and found the experience to be more rewarding. Or maybe I would have been a poorer reader but better experiencer (ie., feeling super-cool in impressing people with my nooky little device, perhaps), with my reading retention going to utter shit the way it does in the scanning versus reading method I find myself doing when engaged with the written word on a display device of a non-organic nature.
There are a few parts of the book I really liked, but talking about them would give away parts of the book that would be better discovered (not experienced) by the reader.
Fuck digital reading devices.
