First of all, I'll say that I found this book to be quite well-written, if extremely disturbing. I felt pulled into the world of the book and connected with the characters fairly quickly.
This isn't the first thing I've seen or read about the Blood Countess. I'm aware of her on a historical level, thanks to Horrible Histories. She also appeared as a villain in a particular horror movie.
This book provided some disturbing insights into Erzesbet's character and what might have been going through her mind. There were a lot of graphic scenes that I could picture really well in my mind.
I would have liked more of an explanation about Lizzie and her motivations. Apparently, she had hold od Erzesbet's writings somehow, but no expkanation was given. In a way, I felt as if I'd been dropped right in the middle of the story.
I felt that some of the supporting characters worked really well, but others, I kept getting confused about. I wasn't sure who served what purpose, though it was less confusing in the 1600s.
The quotes at the beginning of various sections worked well at setting the scene, in my opinion. Some of the writing was poetic in parts, which added to the generally disturbing theme of the book.
I did find the writing a little too small and I had to squint a bit at the page to read it.
I probably would read the next book in the series. This one was enough to hook me and make me want to see what happens next.
